OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced the launch of Sora—a new tool for generating videos based on text prompts. The service offers stylistic customization and flexible content management options.
Key features of Sora:
- video generation from text — users can input text prompts like "mammoths walking through the desert" to receive corresponding video clips;
- storyboard (video planning) — the tool allows users to specify scripts, for instance, to indicate that an event should occur at a certain second in the video;
- editing and combining — includes creating opening and closing scenes, as well as merging multiple clips into a single video;
- style customization - the ability to select styles for videos to tailor content to specific needs.

In requests, users can specify which camera or film was used for the video clip, set color correction and quality parameters, as well as the overall mood and theme of the video. The company stated that initially, it will restrict uploads of content featuring specific individuals and block explicit materials.
OpenAI introduced two subscription tiers for ChatGPT with access to the Sora video generation tool, each differing in functionality and limit volumes.
ChatGPT Plus plan ($20 per month) is suitable for users who need basic access to video features and includes:
- access to create short videos;
- up to 50 videos per month (1,000 credits);
- maximum video resolution of 720p (pixels);
- duration of a single video limited to 5 seconds;
ChatGPT Pro plan ($200 per month) is designed for professional users and content creators. It includes:
- the ability to create an unlimited number of videos in slow motion;
- up to 500 videos per month in priority generation mode (10,000 credits);
- maximum video resolution of 1080p (pixels);
- video duration can be up to 20 seconds;
- up to 5 parallel generations;
- download videos without watermarks.
The platform has already launched in the USA and will become available in most countries. However, Sora may be unavailable in the UK and Europe due to local legal requirements.
OpenAI has encountered unexpectedly high demand for the new Sora tool. "We significantly underestimated the demand for Sora. [We] will need time to provide access to everyone who wants it. We are trying to figure out how to do this as quickly as possible!" Altman wrote on his X blog.
You can explore the already developed videos on the official Sora website and in the product review.
