In September, activity in the automotive market saw a slight decline, as reported by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms.
During the month, the traffic safety authorities registered and re-registered 110.1 thousand vehicles, which is 1.1% less than in August. Compared to September 2023, this number has dropped by a quarter.
Sales of passenger cars decreased by 0.3% compared to the previous month, totaling 101.6 thousand units. The most significant declines were observed in Andijan (-9.1%), Kashkadarya (-7.9%), and Tashkent regions (-7.7%).
The most pronounced decline is felt in the secondary market. Over the month, Uzbeks purchased only 60.5 thousand used cars, which is 6.3% less than in August and 38% lower compared to the previous year.
In the primary market, demand approached 41 thousand cars, increasing by more than 10% over the month and by 7.7% year-on-year. Local vehicle sales, in particular, grew by 12% compared to last year, totaling 37.6 thousand units.
However, following the surge in August, the growth rate in the imported vehicle segment significantly declined. Over the month, around 3,300 new foreign cars were sold, which is 4.5% more than in August.
Electric vehicles experienced the highest sales growth since early 2021. In September, over 4,200 electric cars were sold—2.4 times more than the previous month when demand hit a low.
The annual growth rate was approximately 17%. As before, the majority of demand was concentrated in Tashkent, where 3,180 electric cars were sold.
Quarterly car sales decreased by almost 27%, totaling 295.6 thousand units. Meanwhile, the decline in the electric transport segment was only 5.6%.
