The USA will allocate a grant of $500,000 for architectural restoration work at Registan Square in Samarkand, according to the press service of the US Embassy in Uzbekistan.
It is noted that the proposal submitted by the Agency for Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan was selected as part of a global competition and is the largest for Uzbekistan in the history of the contest.
The Agency, with the support of the International Institute of Central Asian Studies, will carry out the conservation and restoration of the facade of the Sher-Dor madrasah. Foreign specialists will be invited as consultants to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the project.
In addition, project partners will assist in establishing connections between the Agency and leading global scholars, providing access to necessary documentation and resources for efforts to preserve cultural heritage and disseminate scientific data.
“We are pleased to be part of the efforts to restore the beautiful and iconic Sher-Dor madrasah at the historic Registan Square. These efforts will help preserve this important monument for many generations and for all humanity. Such partnerships will strengthen ties between our countries and make a significant contribution to the preservation of this important monument and the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan,” noted US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick.
This funding marks the 14th project supported by the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation in Uzbekistan, which has to date allocated nearly $1.35 million to the country. The new project supports the bilateral Agreement on the Protection of Cultural Heritage signed in 2023 between Uzbekistan and the USA.
