In 2024, there was a significant increase in the number of foreign citizens and stateless individuals forcibly expelled from the Russian Federation for violating migration laws. According to information provided by TASS, as of December 2024, courts had issued expulsion orders for over 80,000 migrants. This figure represents a considerable rise compared to the previous year.
In 2023, during the same period, there were over 44,200 cases of forced expulsion of foreign nationals and stateless persons. Thus, in 2024, the number of expelled migrants nearly doubled.
The capital region, which includes Moscow and the Moscow Oblast, became the leader in the number of expelled migrants. Throughout 2024, 23,000 individuals were expelled from Moscow and the surrounding areas. This accounts for almost one-third of the total number of expulsions across the country.
The strengthening of migration control and a stricter policy towards violators of migration legislation are likely the reasons for such a significant increase in expulsions. Authorities continue to work on improving the mechanisms for regulating migration processes and ensuring compliance with the law in this area.
It is anticipated that the trend towards tightening migration policy will continue in 2025. More detailed information regarding the reasons for expulsion in each specific case is not disclosed to maintain confidentiality. However, as a rule, the grounds for forced expulsion include violations of entry, residence, and employment regulations within the Russian Federation.
