An agreement was reached at the Joint Working Group on Water Cooperation. The negotiations involved Uzbekistan's Minister of Water Resources, Shavkat Khammraev, and the head of the relevant Kazakh agency, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
The parties agreed to ensure an uninterrupted water supply through the "Dostyk" canal during the irrigation season of 2025 and to jointly repair interstate canals. This will enhance water supply for agricultural lands in Kazakhstan's Turkestan region and Uzbekistan's Jizzakh region.
Another topic of discussion was the automation of water accounting on the Syr Darya River. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan identified five points each for the installation of monitoring systems and agreed on the technical specifications for the preparation of the project feasibility study. In February, the working group plans to discuss further steps with international organizations.
It is worth noting that by April 2025, Kazakhstan is expected to receive 11 billion cubic meters of water from the Syr Darya River. This water volume will be utilized for preparing and ensuring the irrigation season in the southern regions of the neighboring republic.
