As part of the ongoing administrative reforms in Uzbekistan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree to reduce the number of civil servants. According to the document, the staff of managerial and production personnel in ministries and departments will be reduced by 5.2%, which amounts to approximately 2,949 people. The number of managerial personnel in the republican executive authorities will be decreased to 53,560 individuals.

The main goal of this decision is to enhance the efficiency of state management and to create a more compact and modern system of government apparatus. The reduction in staff will help lower the costs associated with maintaining government bodies and redirect the freed-up resources toward addressing social issues.

The most significant staff reduction occurred in the Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction (−1,416 employees), as well as in the Ministry of Economy and Finance (−580). There has been a substantial decrease in the number of employees in the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade (−336), the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change (−273), and the Ministry of Justice (−208). At the same time, there is an increase in staff in the Customs Committee (+693) and the Committee on Family and Women (+434).

Currently, Uzbekistan has 21 ministries, 14 committees, 26 agencies, and 9 inspections, totaling 70 republican executive authorities.

The staff reduction may lead to increased efficiency in the work of government bodies by eliminating duplicate functions and optimizing work processes. The last time the number of managerial and production personnel in ministries and departments was reduced was by 24% (17,447 people) at the beginning of last year.
