The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia will start revoking the citizenship status of individuals who obtained Russian citizenship but did not complete the oath procedure, beginning November 23. The relevant regulations are established in the decree of the President of the Russian Federation regarding citizenship matters.
The deadline for these individuals to take the oath expired on November 22. "Starting November 23, 2024, such individuals will be regarded as not having acquired Russian citizenship, and decisions regarding their acceptance into Russian citizenship will become invalid," the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained.
It is noted that the provisions of the decree do not apply to those who acquired Russian citizenship before September 1, 2017, when the obligation to take the oath came into effect, or who were exempted from it at the time of obtaining citizenship.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation previously warned compatriots who were granted citizenship after September 1, 2017, about the necessity to take the oath as soon as possible. This requirement also applies to children if the decision regarding their citizenship was made after they turned 18.
