Uzbekistan has introduced criminal liability for bribery in sports.

The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has signed a law aimed at combating corruption in the sports sector.

According to the amendments made to the Criminal Code, organizers and participants of sports competitions will be held accountable for accepting bribes as well as for altering the results of sporting events.

“The law aims to ensure accountability for crimes committed in the sports sector and to strengthen the reputation of our republic on the international stage,” – stated in the document.

Specifically, the Criminal Code has been supplemented with Article 214-1, which stipulates that the illegal acquisition of material values or property benefits by participants and organizers of sports competitions will result in a fine ranging from 50 to 100 BRW, deprivation of certain rights for up to three years, and restrictions or imprisonment from one to three years.

According to Article 214-2 (bribery of participants and organizers of sports competitions), a fine of 100 to 300 BRW is imposed, along with deprivation of certain rights for a period of three to five years, and restrictions or imprisonment from one to three years.
